Reflections of Aikido practitioners...?

How long have you been practicing, What is your favorite technique, and did you have a day where you had a revelation at practice?

my favorite techniques are the sneaky techniques
the ones the opponent does not see coming. like the simple nikyo on ai hanmi katate dori (turning round the wrist) or an advanced irimi nage (straight hand to the face) sometimes it hurtles the opponent back if he's really going in to it these techniques are usually pretty simple but o so effective. My greatest revelation in aikido came when practicing during a workshop our club organised with Sugano Seichi. Me and my partner were fumbling with a technique while sensei was doing his rounds and decided to use me as a partner to demonstrate the technique. All I remember is hitting the mat and not knowing how I got there. I knew from that moment on that no matter how or what, come hell or high water I was going to learn how to do that. But I still have a long way to go to get there

The inspirational teachings in this collection show that the real way of the warrior is based on compassion, wisdom, fearlessness, and love of nature. The teachings are drawn from the talks and writings of Morihei Ueshiba, founder of the popular Japanese martial art of Aikido, a mind-body discipline he called the "Art of Peace," which offers a nonviolent way to victory in the face of conflict. Ueshiba believed that Aikido principles could be applied to all the challenges we face in life—in personal relationships, as we interact with society, and at work and in business. This edition is a much-expanded version of the original miniature edition that appeared in the Shambhala Pocket Classics series. It features a wealth of new material, including a biography of Ueshiba; an essay by John Stevens that presents Ueshiba's views on "The Art of War versus the Art of Peace"; newly translated doka, didactic "poems of the Way"; and Ueshiba's own calligraphies.

The rapidly changing nature of today's business world requires that people possess strong leadership expertise that will enable them to handle potential problems with efficiency, intelligence, and diplomacy. As managers and employers rethink out-moded business paradigms in order to keep offices running smoothly, production levels high, and morale up, Leadership Aikido presents innovative skills that answer their urgent needs. Author and management consultant John O'Neil shows us how the concepts of aikido can be used as a lifelong business practice. Aikido--the martial arts tradition that stresses victory without harm--employs six master practices that enable us to assess and develop our leadership potential. These practices of aikido are: cultivating self-knowledge; practicing the paradoxical art of planning; speaking the language of mastery; letting values drive our decisions; turning failure into success; and heeding the law of unintended consequences. Using these elements of aikido, we are then able to identify and overcome five inner enemies that impede our progress--failure to grow emotionally; failure to make creative decisions; failure to empathize; failure to manage ego; and failure to overcome alienation and boredom. In his straightforward and thoughtful manner, John O'Neil ensures us that by adopting these practices into our lives, we will benefit both professionally and personally. By embracing the philosophy of aikido and bringing beliefs, perceptions, and actions into harmony, Leadership Aikido will enable us to embark on a path of continual learning, inner personal change, and enlightened leadership that will revolutionize the way we set and achieve our goals.
