Is Aikido Defensively Effective?
Just curious. I've been in Aikido for a whole two or three weeks now, and I enjoy it. But I was just wondering how effective it would be in a real life, defense situation?
I can see how Aikido would be devestatingly effective when used on an untrained opponent, so long as you made variations to the technique that you were using. But I just have a hard time grasping how you can throw or hold somebody by being in a totally relaxed state and using very little muscle and body strength - especially if the person you're up against is a lot bigger or stronger than you.
So can somebody please fill me in on that, or comment on the question asked in the title?
Aikido is the most effective style of martial arts this one has studied in nearly fifty years of such training including Chinese, Korean, Japanese and Western styles.
It is actually easier to use against an actual committed attack then in the relaxed style of study which beginners must use to be safe and so as to learn the techniques.
The next time you are at your dojo, and if your ukemi is good enough, ask the sensei or one of the senior students with the senei's permission, to apply some real power to their throws with you being the uke especially in ura. Resist them with a committed attack as you truly move against them. In all likelihood, you will quickly learn how effective aikido is and can be.
This one once held similar thoughts and with the assistance of one of the senior students, learned how effective some of the techniques can be.
This one has also had to apply techniques outside of the dojo twice and the same was extremely effective both times with one of the instances being with someone who has martial arts experience and a history of assaults.
Please, keep practicing and it is hoped you will come to understand and fully realize the same.
